We may be short one dork this week, but that's not gonna stop us! We're taking one of the (read: the only appropriate) Legendary creature from Battle for Zendikar and doing a Story Circle! And we end up with an awesome deck for our troubles! But that's not all! After we're done with the Omnath deck with all its token-generating insanity, we decided to do a second Story Circle with a completely different flavor of token generation! Remember Endrek Sahr? Yay mono-black tokens! Story Circle Decklists - http://themanapool.com/the-deck-box/storycircle399edh

There's only one thing going on in this episode, but there is seriously a lot of it! We're doing another Mythic Conscription, this time for a more recent example of the pendulum swinging back after a period of overpowered cards ruling Standard. So get to experience the lower power level but without the archaic design choices of the extremely old sets. Champions of Kamigawa was around the time when Wizards was starting towards the modern design philosophies that we currently know and love. But because Kamigawa was printed during a time when we dorks were all playing together, we've got a LOT more to say about these rares. We've all got nostalgia goggles to see around, and some of them are just generally better than some stuff from older sets anyway. Let us know what you think would or wouldn't be mythic!

This episode begins with Brian and Mike regaling us with the tale of their adventures in the blighted, frozen wasteland of Atlanta. They went to GP Atlanta, in case you didn't know. Between the main event, side events, meeting some of you guys, and the prize wall they've got plenty to tell! Sealed, Draft, Commander, and even Legacy all come into play! After that we're doing a segment we haven't seen in a good long while. It has gone by many names, but this time we're simply calling it a Flavor Fight! The Random Card button in Gatherer gave us 8 rare non-legendary contestants, and we pitch them against each other in a single elimination tournament! We're ignoring card stats and going right to the art and flavor of the card to determine the winner! These are always a lot of fun, so let us know what you think!

For our big EIGHT YEAR anniversary show, we're...not doing anything special. We're finishing up our look at the Commander 2015 previews! We've got the rest of the new stuff to go over and then we're gonna poke around the reprints to see what else we can find. There's plenty of discussion of random other nonsense, seemingly and unintentionally focused on 80's and 90's movies. No idea where that came from, but enjoy! It's time for another Mythic Consultation! This week we're finishing off the Mercadian Masques block by hitting up Prophecy. There are THREE big cycles that run through the rares in this set, so we've got a lot to talk about. This is a really strange one you guys. Like seriously. Also, Brian tells us about a Grand Prix Trial he went to. And he robots a lot. Sorry about that. He did well though! Yay! Announcing the Odds & Ends! These are the recordings that are made before and after the podcast proper, both The Mana Pool and Monday Night Magic! They're going to be completely uncensored and unedited except for personal information and the like, and they'll be exclusively for Patreon patrons. The first TMP Odds & Ends which comes from this very episode, is going to be public so everyone can see what they'll be getting (or missing). Let me know what you think! Ladies and gentlemen, this is truly something special! Because we recorded on the weekend, Brian and Dirk were unable to join us but don't worry - I grabbed Bill and Cluze from Monday Night Magic to help us out. I reached out to Alex & Sharon Shaw from the School of Movies podcast and New Century audio drama series to join us, because this one is all about trying to make the Magic movie not suck a giant load of balls! Alex & Sharon talk about film adaptations of nerd culture films a LOT on their show, so they were perfect to bring on. Plus I LOVE their show and really wanted to have them on, so I made this topic up just for that purpose. And Cluze is a big fan of theirs too. And Bill consumes a RIDICULOUS amount of pop culture adaptations AND he's in marketing. And Mike's beard is AMAZING. So...yeah, that's why we're all here. Seriously though, adapting a property into film is a dangerous prospect. Not only do you have all the normal problems, you also have to deal with another serious issue - US! The fans are JUST the worst. You know that. So with such an epic scope, you might notice that the episode has an epic length too. We covered how Magic has handled its story-telling over the years. We discuss potential problems that film adaptations have to watch out for. Alex gives us a list of things the Magic movie would need to be good. And of course we have plenty of tangents, movie discussions, and a borderline-unhealthy number of British colloquialisms. You know, because of the Brits. Alex put the pre- and post-episode behind-the-scenes nonsense on his Patreon, but he made it public for all to enjoy! Be warned: it's completely raw and uncensored. And let me know if you enjoy it, because I'm thinking about doing this sort of thing for my own Patreon! It's time to discuss that yearly occurrence - the rotation of old Standard into new Standard. The dorks are taking a look at the cards and decks that came from Magic 2015 and the Theros block and bidding them a fond farewell. Or in a few cases, laughing maniacally as they disappear. Whichever. But first, a bit of news about the upcoming Arena of the Planeswalkers expansion! Literally, just a bit. And there's the new Comp Rules update for those of you that care. It's time to do another Mythic Conscription! We're continuing on with Masques Block, so the next set is Nemesis. And yes, this set was our nemesis. There just...isn't much going on here. But we had a lot of fun discussing it as usual! But before that we're catching up on some of the news we've missed since our last non-live recording. The new Sealed Pool procedure for BFZ block, the Banned & Restricted List updates, news about Magic Duels, and the new eBooks of Magic fiction. Lots of stuff going on!

It's Prerelease time! Mike, Brian, and Chewie rolled out to Kit Kringle in Winston-Salem to play with Battle for Zendikar for the first time. It's a nice little shop, if somewhat unprepared for the massive turnout, and I highly recommend anyone in the area check it out. As for the Prerelease itself, it turned out to be pretty awesome. Mike was playing Grixis Colorless, Brian was in Mardu Allies/Eldrazi, and Chewie played Bant Aggro. One of the dorks finished in the top 8, one of the dorks managed to fire off the Limit Break of a planeswalker, two of the dorks played against each other (of course), and one of the dorks forgot to RTFC - twice! To find out who did all this and more, you'll just have to listen! BFZ Card Image Gallery - http://magic.wizards.com/en/articles/archive/card-image-gallery/battleforzendikar

The full set has been revealed, so on this episode we're talking about even more cards from Battle for Zendikar! Completely by happenstance, we focused a lot more on commons and uncommons this episode. Seriously, we didn't to that on purpose. This episode begins with a Sam Quiz and ends with a rant and nostalgia. In the middle, Brian keeps bringing it back to the allies, Chewie runs off on tangents, and we try to figure out what's wrong with the non-ally characters, the unsociable jerks. PREVIEWS! We're all excited for the Scars of...no wait. The Return to...hang on. The Battle for Zendikar! That's the one. This episode is seriously just us looking at a bunch of the preview cards and going off on them. Starting with art that Chewie just CANNOT UNSEE and going every which way after that, this one is a good one. At the beginning of the show Brian was sick, Chewie was in a really foul mood, Dirk was good and Mike was beardy. By the end of the episode Brian was losing his voice, Chewie was in a damn good mood, Dirk was passed out, and Mike was...still beardy. All in all, it was a good episode!

It's time to do a segment that we do so incredibly infrequently that it doesn't even have a name! It begins with a simple topic that we each build a deck around. The other two times we did it, the topics were "lifegain" and "counters". This time, it was equally simple - "lands". The other times we've done this we each built vastly different decks from our simple one-word prompt, and this time is no different! If you want to see our lists, the link is down below! After that it's on to the Battle for Zendikar previews! Since the last time we recorded a ridiculous amount of information came out of PAX. Oh, and it's the first week of previews. Rather than trying to catch up completely, we're just going to hit the high notes of the new stuff. You know, the mechanics, the big story characters, the marketing stunts. It's that time again! Due to scheduling and technological problems we weren't able to record a normal episode this week, but thankfully we had a canned episode ready! A couple weekends ago the dorks gathered for some good old Magic-playing fun! Dirk is playing Damia, Sage of Stone. Mike is playing Dakkon Blackblade. Brian is playing Maelstrom Wanderer. And Chewie is debuting his new Marath, Will of the Wild deck that you heard about last episode! This game goes on for the entirety of the episode, with all sorts of ridiculous goings-on going on. And this wasn't one of the long, grindy, miserable, please-just-let-it-end long games. It was a long game with plenty of absolutely insane plays where everyone got a chance to shine. I hope you enjoy it as much as we did!

We begin this episode with a first-impressions review of the Arena of the Planeswalkers miniatures board game! Three of us took the time to figure out how to play (sort of) and successfully completed a game! We're coming at it from the perspective of Magic players trying it out, since most of us have no experience with miniatures games. After that Brian's got another Magic Mad Lib, which is more hilarious than usual when all is said and done! And after that it's time for a long-forgotten segment of the show - Out of the Deck Box! Because Chewie actually built a new Commander deck for the first time in some number of years, he's gonna tell you all about it this episode! It's time for another Mythic Conscription here on The Mana Pool! We're going through Mercadian Masques and trying (accent on trying) to find the rares that might possibly have been mythics if there was such a thing back then. We had some trouble this time around. Masques block was the beginning of a period of powering down, since the last block was the stupidly overpowered Urza block. After that we take a quick look at the recently-revealed decklists for the Zendikar Vs Eldrazi Duel Decks for the sole purpose of checking out the new cards! The handful of new cards show off a mess of new AND returning mechanics! Check them out, they're pretty awesome! The full list for From the Vault: Angels was revealed! Because so many of the included angels were touchstones of our Magic-playing careers, we decided to actually go deep on these! We're taking a look at each one and discussing why it's in the FTV, drooling over new art, and remembering our own experiences. And that's only half the episode! One of our awesome Kickstarter rewards was for a Story Circle that we would then put together and send to the backer. And on this episode, we're finally getting around to it. He wanted a Captain Sisay deck, so this one's for you John! To see the full list that we came up with, check the link below! After an unexpected hiatus last week, most of the dorks are back with a vengeance this week! Dirk is unforunately unable to join us, but we've got a replacement that is very much suited to the topic at hand. Chris Lansdell, former podcasting whore, is with us to talk coverage. Magic coverage has been a thing for a long time, and it's been a fairly regular thing for a pretty good amount of time. But what would it take to get Magic coverage on mainstream sports stations? We're tackling that discussion and all the tangential nonsense that goes with it!
There are several bits of news to cover first, and you'll find all the links below! And don't forget to follow Chris on Twitter @lansdellicious and check out his articles on SCG!

The real purpose of this show, like most of the stuff I do, is to entertain you – the listener. Rather than asking the same old questions that everyone else does, I’m looking to give you a slightly more off-the-wall look into these Magic players and judges and what-have-you by catching them off guard and putting them on the spot. This episode is the last of four from Grand Prix Charlotte 2015! Appearing on this episode are The Lady Cluze (aka Dr. Mrs. Dr. Science), a Level 1 judge and general delight, and Jared Sylva, L4 judge, TO of GP Charlotte, and SCG OP guy! He's also a sexy robot. I also got to talk to some fellow podcasters on this episode! I hit up Mike, Morgan, and Jordan from the At Your End Step podcast as well as Jon Celso of Tap N Sac. The rest of the episode is all about the players. The episode kicks off with the inimitable Adrian Sullivan and just keeps on going! I talked to Justin Cohen, Tom Martell, Josh Utter-Leyton, Ari Lax, Brian Braun-Duin (BBD), Paul Rietzl, and Chris Pikula! Holy crap that's a lot of MTG talent all on one show! Hope you enjoy! This week the dorks are going back to everyone's favorite giant scaly fire-breathing mythical creatures - Dragons! We're heading over to Dirk's Creature Corner so he can tell us all the reasons that Dragons can't actually exist. Whether it's because they can fly even though they shouldn't be able to, because they don't make sense compared to the rest of the fossil record, or because they, you know, BREATHE FIRE, they just don't make sense in the real world. Don't worry though, we managed to have several entertaining and interesting tangents over the course of this conversation! After that we decided to take it easy and just have some extended final thoughts, which we all did. Mike's building Goblins, Brian's building Jeskai Burn, Dirk's got a light at the end of the tunnel, and Chewie has YouTube updates! This episode begins with a brief recap of the Magic Origins Prerelease that Mike and Chewie went to. Then we head over to the San Diego Comic-Con Magic panel, which was really just about story and flavor. Fun stuff. After that we go into Brian's topic idea, and boy is it a good one. Since Magic Origins seems to be so universally lauded, we figure it won't be too long until WotC decides to do Magic Origins 2. So we're checking out the remaining planeswalkers and trying to figure out whose origin should be spotlighted! Along the way we'll design a few of the Legendary Creature halves of these new transforming Walkers, talk about some of the origin stories we may or may not already know, and ramble on about whatever else comes to mind. PREVIEWS! Magic Origins is right around the corner, so we've got a lot of cards to hit! Since the new preview method makes hitting every card virtually impossible, we're just hitting up the mythics and then whatever else catches our eye. There are a lot of awesome cards in the new set, so we're pretty excited! There's also some discussion at the beginning about the upcoming rules changes. We're joined by another Kickstarter backer this week! Aaron comes on to talk about being That Guy. No no, not THAT That Guy. Not one of the bad ones. But the guy that's been playing forever and has lots of cards and lots of decks and actually has some money to spend on the game. Some casual players frown on That Guy, which gives That Guy some kind of stigma. Aaron wants to address that stigma and help change the opinion of That Guy. That Guy might not be all bad. You might even be able to learn something from That Guy's experiences! So don't dump on That Guy! Of course it's also Magic Origins preview season! And today the last of the five double-faced Planeswalkers were revealed, so we're going to take the last bit of the show to cover them. And the new mechanics that we haven't talked about yet, Renown and Spell Mastery! SCG Regionals that Brian was talking about: http://www.starcitygames.com/pages/scgop/regionalchampionships

Brian is playing his Jeskai Ascendancy combo deck! Mike is playing his Loam Assault deck! The other guys from our room (#Team230) are also playing in the main event. JT, who you know from previous episodes, is playing Merfolk. Stark Maximum, who you know from a recent Fifteen Minutes of Fame, is playing his GW Tokens deck.
This is a pretty normal Field Recordings episode, with Chewie tracking down the other dorks between rounds as often as possible to find out what's going on, and said other dorks telling you what happened in that round. There's a fairly large gap in the recording due to exhaustion, difficulty finding dorks, having other plans, and more exhaustion. But Mike and Chewie went back and covered everything we missed in the car on the way home! Of course we can't stay on target completely, it's us! Other tales are contained within this episode. There's the horrible, horrible motel room! And the massive Podcaster Dinner that happened Saturday night! And the cop that flashed his lights and siren behind us while we were recording! We hope everyone enjoys this episode as much as we enjoyed making it! And for those of you we met in Charlotte, it was GREAT to meet you! Hopefully we can meet more of you in the future!

Grand Prix Charlotte happened last weekend, so of course I was there asking Three Questions!
The real purpose of this show, like most of the stuff I do, is to entertain you – the listener. Rather than asking the same old questions that everyone else does, I’m looking to give you a slightly more off-the-wall look into these Magic players and judges and what-have-you by catching them off guard and putting them on the spot.
This episode is the first of four, and covers the first handful of people to answer my questions. Appearing on this episode are SCG commentators Cedric Phillips & Patrick Sullivan, L3 Judge John Alderfer, cosplayer Christine Sprankle, WotC coverage guys Adam Styborski & Corbin Hosler, and L2 Judge & former podcast whore Chris Lansdell! Of course I also talked to a fair share of well-known players! On this episode you'll hear answers from Brad Nelson, Gerry Thompson, Patrick Dickmann, Brian Kibler, Alexander Hayne, Chris VanMeter, Willy Edel, and someone I never thought I'd actually meet in person, Paulo Vitor Damo da Rosa.
Hope you enjoy! Let me know what your answers would be! And keep an eye out for the next batch of Three Questions from Grand Prix Charlotte coming VERY soon!

The dorks are taking a look at everyone's favorite big scary red creatures, Dragons! With a long and storied history dating back to the very beginning of MTG, Dragons are terribly popular. A constant source of wonder and amazement nowadays, you might be surprised to know that dragons weren't always so omnipresent in the early days, and it's really only recently that they've become super ridiculously everywhere. Oh, and Chewie's final thought may or may not have led to a LONG rant about the Star Wars prequels. Just letting you know. It gets pretty intense. The Links:

After taking an unintentional week off, we're back with another of our Kickstarter backers! This week Elliot Hunter (@erjhunter) joins us, and he's awesome! We know this is a really long episode, just think of it as a bonus since you didn't get a new episode last week. First off there is a tiny bit of news involving the planeswalkers in Magic Origins! The ten planes that comprise their original planes and the destination of their first planejump! Then there's the little matter of the draft pick heard 'round the world, Pascal Maynard's pseudo-controversial GP Vegas Top 8 draft pick of a foil Tarmogoyf. To see how it's doing now, click the link a little further down. Elliot comes to us with an excellent idea that we're totally going to steal from him. Of course, he basically stole it from us in the first place, so we'll call it even. In Dirk's Creature Corner, we like to point out how the various creatures (zombies/merfolk thus far) differ from plane to plane. But what if we did that for creatures that don't really merit a Creature Corner? BRILLIANT! For the first edition of this segment Elliot wanted to cover one of the most iconic creatures that are found across most of the planes - GOBLINS! We're bouncing from plane to plane and discussing how these little green (red?) men look, act, and whatever else in each one! The Links:

After several straight weeks of guest hosts, the dorks have decided to break the streak and go it alone. And what better way to kick it off than with another of our trademark Magic Mad Libs! Brian whipped up a good one this week, leaving us all laughing our various and sundry bits off. After that we venture into the territory of nostalgia and do a Mythic Conscription for Onslaught! This was the first new set when we all started playing together, and as such it holds a very special place in our hearts. After taking this second look, it turns out there are a lot of really solid and powerful rares in the set, but we had some troubles finding actual mythics. Let us know what you think deserves to be mythic!

The dorks are joined by another Kickstarter backer this week, Stark Maximum! Stark has a thing for the flavor of the game, so he has two very Vorthosy topics for us to discuss! First, he wants to discuss everyone's favorite italicized words, flavor text! He and the dorks talk about some of their favorite flavor texts, touch on a few different kinds (flavors?) of flavor text, and discuss some of the characters who first made their mark on the game of Magic in italics. From there, Stark steers us into a more general discussion about planeswalkers. But we're chatting about planeswalkers not as cards, but as actual characters. We poke around some of the story that surrounds some of the walkers, discuss the planeswalkers who, as Stark put it, have A story but don't fit into THE story. You know, stuff like that. This episode was a fun one and we hope everyone enjoys! Let us know about your favorite flavor text and planeswalker as a character not as a card Follow Stark on Twitter - @StarkMaximum

On this episode the dorks are joined by another of the Kickstarter backers, Clayton Clemens! Clayton is a pretty cool guy (even though he's one of those Canadians) and doesn't afraid of anything. He's here to get us to talk about Cube! Waaaaaaaay back in our first year, Brian built a Cube and we played it and talked about it on an episode. That was episode 29, for those keeping track. But Cubing has really taken off since then, and we've fallen WAY behind on it. That's what Clayton is here for though! He tells us all about what a Cube is and how you do it and the different flavors and oh my god so much information! Don't worry though, there are PLENTY of sidetracks, tangents, rabbit holes, and various other off-topic conversations, just in case you forgot what show you were listening to. Like I said, Clayton's pretty cool! Follow Clayton on Twitter @Teele87

We're joined this week by fellow podcaster and all-around awesome guy, Mr. Jason Roskam! He's one of the hosts of the Higher Standards podcast, which focuses solely on, oddly enough, the Standard format. Imagine that. But we're not here to talk about Standard! Mr. Roskam tells us all about how he plays Magic with his son! It involves keeping him interested in the game while still helping him to improve and learn more, which is a pretty nifty balancing act. From there the discussion turns to some ideas for how to make Magic, competitive and otherwise, a little more welcoming to newer players. Do you have any ideas? Let us know! After that, we turn to Dirk for another edition of Dirk's Creature Corner! This time (in case you couldn't tell from the title) Dirk is turning his eye towards the fishy existence of Merfolk! Dirk points out all the biological, physiological, evolutionary, and cultural reasons why merfolk just...won't work, whether they are the Leggy or Finny variety. We had a lot of fun discussing fish gills, fish necks, fish hands, fish junk, and of course, fish boobs. There's a lot of talk about the potential origins of these fish people - did they come straight from fish or were they perhaps already on land and backed back into their aquatic homes This one was a lot of fun, and be sure to let us know what creatures we should dissect in the next episode of Dirk's Creature Corner! The dorks are joined this week by our third Kickstarter backer, Kim Ho! Kim is really awesome even though he lives in Canada! And that's racist. Prepare yourself, that's one of the running jokes here! You've been warned! After explaining who he is and how he's doing, Kim directs us to a topic we did a while back on Episode 323 - What If It Cost 2 Less? that we didn't actually name. He has a list of old unfair cards for us to analyze and try to re-cost at a fair price by today's standards. There are also a few less-than-impressive cards in the mix too, just so we don't get bored adding mana to a bunch of stuff. We're pretty sure Kim hates us based on some of his choices. It's cool though, we kind of deserve it! We end the episode with a quick game from Kim - Beast or Six Drop? Taken from former LR host Brian Wong, the idea is that he gives us a card name and we decide if it's a beast, a six drop, both, or neither. I think it was pretty funny, with us tripping over our own thoughts and definitely not cheating. I hope not anyway, because if we did we were cheating poorly. On this episode the dorks have two main topics. First up, Mike and Brian went to SCG Modern States this weekend! Brian took Jeskai Ascendancy (or Ascension, apparently) and Mike took his Loam Assault (with a dash of Smallpox) to do battle. How'd they do? Well that's why you listen to the episode, of course. I mean, duh.
After that it's time for the next entry in our semi-annual-ish series where we take a look at properties in other media to turn into Magic! We've done video games, television shows, and movies (that we can remember) so now it's time for books! The dorks take a look at some modern fantasy books, classic sci-fi, a bunch of favorites, and some seriously obscure stuff. Join us for a discussion of books we've known and loved with some Magic thrown in for good measure!

On this episode, the dorks are taking a look at Exodus, the last set in the Tempest block! We're putting it through the Mythic Conscription, picking out the rares that would have been mythics if that was a thing back then. After we're done with Exodus, we pull up the rares and mythics from Tempest Remastered to see how we did over our last three Conscriptions. Spoiler alert: not bad, not bad at all. Then it's time for a good old Magic Mad Lib! Brian cooked up a nice long one, and after all the old-school card discussion we were suitably silly. Shenanigans, shenanigans everywhere! And our final thoughts this week were pretty long, with Brian going over three different ones himself and Chewie telling a story about almost dying! We hope you all enjoy!

The guys are back for their monthly Hearthstone episode! We begin the episode by answering the frequent question about how the five of us became a long-running Blizzard gaming podcast. If you've ever wondered about our humble origins, this is the episode to listen to! Learn all about how Chewie, Brian, Mike, Dirk, and Squanto (Ecksell) got together! After that it's back to business as usual for a Hearthstone episode! We begin by going over new decks and recent changes to existing decks. Lots of discussions come out of this, including whether Dr. Boom should be nerfed and how they might do it and what decks we're sick of running into all the time. After that, Dirk takes the reins for his Lore segment. This week, thanks to the imminent release of Blackrock Mountain, he tells us all about Ragnaros the Firelord. And what a Tolkien fever dream of a story that is, holy crap. And finally, we each pick a pair of cards from Blackrock Mountain to talk about in depth. Don't forget, you can start playing the first wing on April 2nd!

This episode begins with a discussion of the new Commander rules change that eliminates tucking and bouncing of Commanders. The dorks are split for and against this particular change, let us know how you feel about it! Next up is a Mythic Conscription for the next set in the Tempest block - Stronghold! This is a seriously strange set, as each of us had trouble actually finding ten mythics! But the discussion is really interesting and entertaining. Let us know what you think should or should not have been mythic! And finally, the dorks tell you all about their Prerelease experiences! Brian and Mike did two apiece and Chewie did one, so you'll get to hear all about that! What did you play and how did you do? This episode the dorks are joined by an old friend - Eric of Many Names! (@EricMTGCast on Twitter) He used to hold the record for most guest appearances on the show (until Bill gradually stole it from him), and he's back this week to talk about Dragons of Tarkir! Rather than do the usual thing where we just pick cards we like seemingly at random, Brian had a neat idea. We're each going to create a pack of cards from the set - 9 commons, 3 uncommons, 1 rare, and a "foil" that can be anything. All five of us made up a pack, and there wasn't as much overlap as you might think! So get ready for a massive dose of Dragons with our friendly voice from the past! If you'd like to see more about it, check out the latest TMP News so Chewie can tell you all about it with visual accompaniment! Since the last episode, almost HALF of Dragons of Tarkir has been revealed! Since there were WAY too many cards to actually cover them all, we just hit the big awesome important things. Since neverending preview season is upon us yet again, we're taking a look at the first batch of new cards from Dragons of Tarkir. Previews just started the day before we recorded, so there aren't terribly many yet. Don't worry though, we'll make up for that on the next couple episodes. Because we were so short on previews, we had to fill the time with something. Last week they announced Tempest Remastered for Magic Online, so what better way to finish the episode than to run a Mythic Conscription on Tempest? We couldn't think of anything better either, so that's what we did! Man, old Magic sets are SO incredibly bizarre by today's standards.

This episode was recorded at Brian's house last weekend! And thank goodness it was, because we didn't record a new episode this week because Chewie got sick and died. How convenient! But yes, in this extra-long episode we play two games of four-player Commander! Nothing fancy this time, no Planechase, no Archenemy, no Tiny Leaders, no Assassin. Just good old EDH at its best! The first game was really good, while the second game was a normal good. It was not one of those bad drag-on games that we sometimes accidentally record. There's really not much else to say, we hope you guys enjoy these games as much as we did!

Look everyone, Bill joined us this week! After the Duel Decks and From the Vault announcements, we hit up another pre-mythic rarity set so we can pick out the rares we think would be Mythics if it had existed back then. After going over the many many name ideas we got, we decided to go with Mythic Conscription! Thanks a lot for all the suggestions! The set we're tackling this time is Scourge, the last set that was all about the Dragons! For the record, this one is REALLY weird. What would your mythics be? There are rumors of Netflix planning to create a series based on The Legend of Zelda. We started there and tried to imagine what kind of show you could get out of the various stories and settings of Magic. From police procedurals to an Animatrix-style anthology, we kick around lots of totally brilliant ideas for episodic shows about Magic, and Wizards should TOTALLY hire us. Like seriously. What do you think would work?

After some massive pre-show technical difficulties on Brian's part that ultimately resulted in him falling off the call for the duration of the episode, we got a nice fast start this week. One of our listeners (Turner!) gave us an idea for a new recurring segment! We're going back to old sets that existed before the Mythic rarity and picking out which rares would be Mythics now. We don't have a name for it just yet, so feel free to send us any ideas. We're kicking it off with a look back at Legions, the first small set that came out once we all started playing together. Let us know what you think! After that, we move on to another first appearance of a recurring segment! Dirk's Creature Corner makes its debut here! Since Dirk's background is in Biology, he's going to be leading us in a discussion about various creatures in Magic and how they just can't exist in the real world. We're kicking it off with everyone's favorite pop-culture horror icon, the Zombie! Let us know what you think of our two new segments! We'll be coming back to them periodically in the future, so any suggestions are welcome!

Welcome to our second Kickstarter backer episode! This week we have on Greg, the MadStork, who has been listening to us for far, far too long. And we love him for it! He brings with him an episode idea that really appeals to us. Greg has us combining two things we love - Duel Decks and Commander! The discussion begins with a brief recap of what Duel Decks in Magic actually are. We then roam around our brains trying to track down other conflicts that would be great as Duel Decks, no matter how ridiculous. Cats are apparently jerks, because we came up with a lot of different conflicts involving cats. It's pretty ridiculous. So ridiculous in fact that we picked one of these cat conflicts to do a pair of Story Circles! One is a Cat Commander Duel Deck, because cats are jerks, and the opponent is...you know what? I'm gonna keep that a secret. Just listen and find out! Commander Duel Decks from this episode: http://themanapool.com/the-deck-box/storycircle358edh/

This is our first episode featuring the Kickstarter backers who chose the "come on the show" reward tier! The inaugural guest is Bosco from Washington, who brings with him a nice wide-open topic. So wide-open in fact that we could easily do several episodes just on this sort of thing. DECKBUILDING! We're taking a look at the various methods that we all use to build casual decks. There are many many ways to build a deck, whether it's a 60-card casual deck, a Commander deck, or a tournament deck. Building around a specific card, a mechanic, a tribe, flavor, tweaking something that's already been built, and more. We're taking a very quick look at them all, because taking a long look at each one would take several hours. I'm pretty sure we'll end up coming back to some of this in the future. We hope you guys enjoy! Big thanks to Bosco for backing us and coming onto the show with an excellent topic! Keep an ear out for more Fifteen Minutes of Fame! episodes (Bosco's great idea for a title) in the next few weeks! Hopefully anyway.

This week the dorks are going over the two big things that happened in the last few days. First up is the Banned & Restricted List update. I know, I know, we're a casual podcast and this shouldn't really matter to us, but it does. Chewie doesn't even play tournament Magic and he has very strong opinions on the matter, probably because he holds the DCI to a higher standard than they hold themselves. But there's plenty of good discussion about the big news since Modern, Legacy, and Vintage all had big changes. Then we have to talk about the Fate Reforged Prerelease! Three of us each went to one prerelease apiece. We played Temur, Abzan, and Sultai! Some of us did better than others, of course. But we'll tell you all about it, then we'll go over some cards that were great, or better than we thought, or whatever. Hopefully our technical difficulties this week don't bleed over into the episode too much!

Fate Reforged has been revealed in its entirety. So as per usual, we spend this episode poking around the Card Image Gallery pointing out all the cool stuff from the rest of the set. Of course we have to figure out what we're going to play at the prerelease too while we're at it. Oddly enough, we're all leaning towards one clan. Can you guess which one? We also spend some time at the beginning rambling pointlessly about some potential upcoming bannings or unbannings, but what do we know? It's preview season! That means we brought Bill (Squee) on, as is tradition. We start with a look at the newly-revealed Clash Packs, which are full of nifty rares and new art. It's the first week of Fate Reforged previews, and none of us are completely with it. Seriously, we can't seem to get our words working properly. We're bad at this game. As we usually do during the first week, we begin with the mechanics of the new set! So of course we spent a nice long time on Manifest, which is easily one of the most interesting Magic mechanics in recent memory, possibly ever. From the mechanics we move on to the rest of the Card Image Gallery and hit up every card that was listed there at the time! Be prepared for lots of Back to the Future references this episode. Seriously, we refer to Khans as the beginning of the film's version of 1985, Fate Reforged as 1955, and Dragons as end of the film's 1985. If you haven't seen the first movie, I HIGHLY recommend you look it up. Not because of this episode, but because it's FREAKIN' AWESOME!
